Determining optimal fallout shelter times following a nuclear detonation
نویسنده
چکیده
In the event of a single, low-yield nuclear detonation in a major urban area, rapidly providing adequate shelter to affected populations could save 10 000– 100 000 individuals from a fatal exposure to fallout radiation. However, poorly sheltered individuals may remain at risk. Current guidance and prior studies are not consistent as to the timing and conditions under which poorly sheltered individuals should leave their shelters to evacuate or obtain better shelter. This study proposes methods to determine the optimal shelter time based on information potentially available following a nuclear detonation. For the case in which individuals move to an adequate shelter that can be reached within 15min, individuals should stay in a poor-quality shelter for at most 30min after the detonation. If adequate shelter is available nearby (within 5min), then poorly sheltered individuals should immediately proceed to the better shelter.

Background: The earlier Atomic Bomb explosion in Hiroshima and Nagasaki, and three worth mentioning nuclear accidents - detonation at Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant, Chernobyl nuclear fallout and an accident at Three Mile Island nuclear power plant have made us more worried about the secure exploitation of nuclear energy. The central focus of this paper is to review radiation-mediated health e...

Introduction: Individual exposure after a nuclear detonation (atomic bomb) delivers abundant doses with high dose rates to the people who were located near the nuclear detonation location or within the fallout zone. Effects of the radiation to the humans and animal models will be studied and a fundamental ground work of medical services and managing systems for such accidents wo...

We superimpose a radiation fallout model onto a traffic flow model to assess the evacuation versus shelter-in-place decisions after the daytime ground-level detonation of a 10-kt improvised nuclear device in Washington, DC. In our model, ≈ 80k people are killed by the prompt effects of blast, burn, and radiation. Of the ≈ 360k survivors without access to a vehicle, 42.6k would die if they immed...

Subsequent events seem to indicate that, when President Kennedy, in July of 1961, made his appeal for family fallout shelters, he was not doing so because he thought the shelters would protect a large part of the public from a likely nuclear attack. Rather, it seems, his intent in the shelter program, as in the call-up of reserves that took place at about the same time, was to enhance the credi...
